Rain Gardens for Your Yard
If you have ever wanted to know what to do with that pool of standing water in your yard, or what to do with that corner underneath your downspout, this presentation will provide the answer. Make a rain garden! The Bangor Area Stormwater Group will explain the beneficial uses of rain gardens along with a hands-on demonstration using audience volunteers for assembling a real live rain garden.

Got Pests? Ask the Experts: Tools, traps, and other safe ways to keep your lawn and gardens looking good.
Bring your questions to this panel of experts including: Lois Stack, Ornamental Horticulturist, University of Maine Cooperative Extension Kathy Murray, Entomologist, Maine Department of Agriculture, and Gary Fish, Coordinator, Maine YardScaping Coalition and Certification Specialist, Maine Board of Pesticides Control. Using photos, actual examples and more, presenters will engage the audience in fun, hands-on learning activities to provide simple steps you can do to keep bugs, weeds and diseases away.

Composting Year Round, Indoors, and Out with Worms!
Mark Follansbee from WormMainea will demonstrate how to make an easy worm compost bin so you never have to touch them, never have to smell them, only have to feed them unwanted kitchen scraps. The result is a reduction in trash volume and gaining the richest compost ever.

Get the Honey Bee BUZZ! Live BEES!!!
Dr. William H. Dorrity III will demonstrate the joys of beekeeping and making honey. With over 40 years of beekeeping experience to share, Bill will provide the audience an introduction to how to get started and add some fun fats about Honey Bees, while showing off his LIVE BEES.

The Science of Smiling: How Gardening Can Weed Out the Diabetes Blues
Dana Greene PA-C, St. Joseph Hospital, will describe how your backyard can do double duty as a home based exerciser and a relaxation spa when it contains a garden. Recent medical studies have found that gardening is one of the best activities around when it comes to preventing or improving chronic health conditions such as diabetes. A minimum of 30 minutes of gardening (or other yard work) three to five days a week can reap huge benefits. Come spend 60 minutes with us and we will provide you with a basket full of diabetes self care tips. In the Science of Smiling we will offer advice on how to expand your smile garden and shrink your waist line. You’ll be controlling your diabetes and raising your property value at the same time!

Get Your Hands Dirty! Creating Healthy Productive Soils!
Sensational flowers and vegetables are born from healthy, fertile soils. Get Spring fever by running your fingers through some quality compost, while Bruce Hoskins from the Maine Soil Testing Service at the University of Maine demonstrates how to improve your soil using local compost and other organic products. You may bring a soil sample for a free pH test after the talk or for a complete for fee analysis at the lab during the following week.

Cooking Up Bountiful Garden Treats
Bangor’s own Ann Marie Orr will stir up some delectable, and healthy treats utilizing the bountiful harvest expected from your gardening efforts. Join the audience on stage for a live cooking demonstration with sharing and tasting of the most delicious and easy-to-make treats.

The Bangor Land Trust will present Trails News providing you with fun ideas for where to go and what to do this Spring to get some fresh air and enjoy the outdoors. Learn about all of the wonderful outdoor opportunities offered in the Bangor area this Spring and year-round.

Enjoy Gardening: Don’t Let Physical Limitations Hold You Back
Don’t let physical limitations stop you from enjoying your garden. Physical Therapist, Randy Cyr, St. Joseph HomeCare Rehab Services Clinical Leader and St. Joseph HomeCare Occupational Therapist, Rachel Wintle, will share tips, provide advice and demonstrate adaptive tools which will help you continue to enjoy gardening. Physical limitations can be discouraging, but no more, come and see how you can get back to what you enjoy the most with the professionals from St. Joseph HomeCare!

Owls Are Our Friends!
Get up close and friendly with real live owls! Stan, from the Birdsacre Stanwood Wildlife Sanctuary, will show off his owl friends to help youngsters and (young at heart) understand the delicate balance between human development and the natural world. The Stanwood Wildlife Sanctuary named for the Ornithologist, Cordelia Stanwood, is located in Ellsworth and is open and free to the public.

Peony Society Tea Party
Come have tea with Ken Liberty and members of the Peony Society of Maine for an informal discussion about everything you ever wanted to know about Peonies! Ken will explain to the audience how to plant, divide, and why they attract ants that crawl all over the buds. He will expound on varieties such as herbaceous, tree, and intersectional, and which would be best for your garden.

“WOW” Plants for Maine Gardens

Lisa Colburn journalist for The Maine Garden Journal, will share with the audience the tips she has gleaned from interviewing over 100 passionate and successful Maine Gardeners. The audience will learn what plants add the most excitement and curiosity to gardens, often eliciting the question, “WOW, what’s that?”.

Grow Edible Mushrooms in Your Backyard!

Candice and Dan Heydon, proprietors of Oyster Creek Mushrooms, will introduce the audience to the magical world of mushroom growing. Candice will provide instructions and share her tips for growing wonderful delicious mushrooms in your very own backyard or dooryard, your choice! This successful passionate couple began a small business in 1992 that now harvests and ships 11,000 pounds a year to restaurants and markets all over the region. Get your very own mushroom growing starter kits, available for sale during the presentation.
